Why architecture's future is in your wardrobe | Josh Jen | TEDxScarisbrick

In Fashioning Memories, architect and designer Josh Jen reconsiders where architecture begins. Instead of drawing solely from land, climate, or form, he looks to fashion as a source of spatial understanding. Across cultures, garments carry patterns, proportions, and craftsmanship that express how people live, move, and belong. These details can become the foundation for a new architectural vocabulary that is both local and universal.By examining fashion as a record of memory and identity, Josh proposes a framework where design draws from cultural expression rather than imitation. This approach creates buildings that speak the language of their communities, shaped not only by material or technology but by the histories woven into the clothes people wear. Fashioning Memories invites us to see fashion as a living archive for architecture, offering a more human and contextually grounded way to design the spaces we inhabit. Josh Jen is a London-based architect, artist, and designer whose work bridges architecture, fashion, and cultural identity. Through exhibitions, digital design, and research-led installations, Josh explores how garments can shape new architectural vocabularies that are locally grounded and globally relevant. His collaborations with CLO 3D and Pantone have been exhibited internationally, showcasing how digital tools can translate cultural narratives into spatial form. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
